FAQ

  • What is psychotherapy?

Think of it like having a conversation with a trained professional who can help you understand and navigate through the complexities of life. They can help you identify patterns in your thoughts, feelings and behaviours and help you develop strategies to improve your overall mental health and well-being.

  • What types of issues can be addressed through psychotherapy?

A wide range of issues can be addressed through psychotherapy such as anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, relationship problems, self-esteem issues, addiction, and many other mental health concerns. Your consultation with your therapist is a great chance to learn more about what they specialize in.

  • How long does psychotherapy typically last and how often will I see my therapist?

The duration of psychotherapy can vary depending on your needs and goals. Some people may benefit from a few sessions, while others may require ongoing therapy for several months or even years.

The frequency of therapy sessions can vary depending on the individual's needs and goals. Some people may benefit from weekly sessions, while others may need to see a therapist less frequently.

  • What should I expect during my first session?

During your first session, your therapist will typically ask you about your history and current concerns and what your goals for therapy are. Before your session, you will be required to fill out an intake and consent form and your therapist will quickly highlight key parts and will explain the process of therapy. The first 1-4 sessions are often seen as a “trial” run for both you and your therapist to learn more about each other and a therapeutic built relationship.

  • What is the difference between psychotherapy and psychiatry?

Psychotherapy is focused on talk therapy and addressing emotional and psychological issues, while psychiatry is focused on the medical treatment of mental health conditions, including the use of medication. Psychiatrist are medical doctors and can prescribe medication and diagnose mental health conditions and on occasion provide psychotherapy.

  • Are therapy sessions confidential?

Yes, therapy sessions are confidential and your therapist will not share any information about you or your treatment without your written consent. However, there are some exceptions to confidentiality, such as if the therapist believes that you or someone else is in danger. Your information is kept safe on our secure platform through the Jane App.

  • How can I pay for therapy?

Payment for each session is to be made before your scheduled appointment time through e-transfer. After your appointment, you will receive an email with your receipt and your therapists registration number which you can use to submit an insurance claim if you are covered. We do not bill directly to insurance companies at this time.

  • How do we meet virtually?

You have the option of meeting with your therapist by video or by phone. If you plan to meet by video, you and your therapist will meet via Jane App. If you chose to meet by phone, your therapist will give you a call at your scheduled time. With virtual therapy you can get comfortable in any quiet and private space of your choosing.

  • What happens if I miss a session?

Life gets hectic and sometimes you might need to reschedule a session. We ask that you give your therapist 24 hours notice if you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment. If you miss this window or accidentally miss an appointment, you will be charged for 50% of the full session fee.
